Wage watchers: how much does a fire brigade paramedic earn?

19:27 22/07/2013

Fire brigade paramedic Tom Roesbeke, 26, from Eeklo talks about what he earns and how he spends it

What do you do for a living?

I am a paramedic for the fire brigade in Ghent. As paramedic I am responsible for the medical support, evacuation and treatment of patients. This can take place in many circumstances: at their houses, along the motorway... My main tasks are to administer first aid, to evacuate of patients and accompany them during transport.

Do you enjoy your work?

Very much, it is a real dream job! I would never want to trade. It is a job with a lot of variety and a good shift system.

What do you think of your salary?

I take home €1,700 a month (+ meal tickets and hospital insurance). I'm pretty happy. We have a fixed salary that increases with seniority, and there are shift premiums on top.

Would you look elsewhere if the money was better?

No. I actually earn less than my previous job but now I look forward to going to work every day.

Do you save?

Yes, to buy a house.

What does the biggest chunk of your income go towards?

I do not have large bills since I still live with my parents. My money goes mainly towards clothes, going out, travelling, my phone bill...

What do you resent parting with your money for?

Fines and taxes.

What do you gladly pay for?

Travelling, clothes, eating out and buying my own place.

What do you dream of?

Staying healthy, raising a family and buying a house.
