Delhaize buys Louis Delhaize, plans to keep two brands separate
Delhaize is further expanding its network by formalising the acquisition of wholesaler Delfood, owner of 303 Louis Delhaize stores around Belgium.
The deal went through following approval from the competition authorities, on the condition that Delhaize sells seven convenience stores and petrol stations to competitors in areas where it would otherwise have held a monopoly.
The acquisition includes 303 Louis Delhaize stores or outlets under supply contracts, as well as logistics services and headquarters based in Belgium.
Delhaize specified that Delfood will remain a separate legal entity within Delhaize and that the Louis Delhaize brand will continue to exist, as will the logistics activities and head office.
This acquisition allows Delhaize to expand its store network to a total of 1,109 outlets in Belgium and Luxembourg.
“Thanks to this acquisition, Delhaize will be able to consolidate its position in the Belgian food distribution market and make its expertise in food and fresh produce available to Louis Delhaize stores,” said chief executive Alexandros Boussis.
“It's also a nice nod to history, as this agreement brings together two companies with the same name and the same founding family, after more than 150 years of existence.”
