Warning over fake text messages from Card Stop

20:05 07/01/2020

A growing number of fraudulent text messages are being sent to consumers, purporting to be from the emergency bank-card blocking service Card Stop, the Belgian banking federation Febelfin has warned.

The SMS currently circulating informs the recipient that their debit or credit card has been cancelled. A link in the message leads to a fake website where users are encourage to fill in personal information including payment data.

"The risk of fraud is therefore very high," said Febelfin and payment provider Worldline in a joint warning on Tuesday.

Anyone who might have fallen for the scam should change their online banking codes and contact the real Card Stop service on 070 344 344 to have their cards reissued, before filing a police complaint.

Be prepared to be scammed a second time, as Card Stop makes you pay 30 cents a minute to listen to an announcement, then some annoying music, then, maybe, to have the great privilege to be able to speak with one of their customer representatives.

Why should banks subsidize a service to be provided for free to customers who lose their cards or who fall for a scam?
