Wage watchers: how much does a language teacher earn?

16:16 03/05/2013

Language teacher Kurt Beynen, 29, from Leuven talks about what he earns and how he spends it.

What do you think of your salary?

I earn €1,750 after tax. I’m pretty pleased with my wages really. Everything is getting more expensive but we manage.

Would you change jobs if the money was better?

No. Teaching is in my blood. It’s incredibly gratifying to teach.

Do you spare?

I try put €300 to €400 a month aside. Not for anything specific, but if my partner and I ever get married or have children, then it will come in handy.

What does the biggest part of your salary go towards?

The mortgage on the house we bought four years ago. I pay €400 a month, which suits me just fine.

Is there anything in particular you save on?

Not particularly. I don’t really feel the economic crisis to be honest with you. Also, we don’t have a car, simply because we don’t need one now that we live in the centre of town. We cycle to work.

What do you gladly pay for?

Food! I like to go to a nice restaurant, and I even prefer to cook. I will happily pay for good quality ingredients – which can have its price. I also enjoy spending money on those who are close to me, so I’ll gladly buy presents for my friends for example.

Is there anything you resent parting with your money for?

I don’t buy make-up or jewellery for my girlfriend, but if it’s really worth making an effort, or it’s for a special occasion, then I would give her a nice ring.
