Team Belgium bring home nine medals from Youth Summer Olympics

Belgium brought home nine medals from the Youth Summer Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, which wrapped up last Friday. Belgium sent 32 athletes, who took part in 20 sports during the 13-day event.

Two athletes brought home gold: Maité Beernaert of West Flanders won the gold medal for the long jump with a distance of 6.31 metres, while Quentin Mahauden of Walloon Brabant won gold in karate.

Silver medals went to Jules Vangeel in canoe-kayak, Badr Achab in middleweight taekwondo, the men’s basketball team and the equestrian jumping team. Bronze medals went to Alessia Corrao for judo, Senna Roos for archery the badminton doubles mixed team.

Team manager Gert Van Looy was very pleased with the results. “Nine medals, with the final one being gold, that was fantastic,” he said. “For the athletes, the Youth Olympic Games is an unforgettable experience, one that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives and their sports careers.”
