Belgium’s Red Devils return home following loss to Spain

Belgium’s Red Devils returned home via Brussels Airport over the weekend following their 2–1 loss to Spain in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The Belgian team’s captain Youri Tielemans left the pitch during the warm-up and was unable to start in the match, with Hans Vanaken replacing him.

Amadou Onana had already been taken out of the line-up earlier in the week in another blow to the team.

Belgium nevertheless played a strong game against the Spaniards, considered by many to be the favourite for this year’s World Cup.

Charles De Ketelaere scored Belgium’s only goal, which was his third in just two matches.

Thibaut Courtois made several well-timed saves before he had to leave the pitch injured and in tears in the 70th minute. He was replaced by Senne Lammens, a World Cup debutant.

Just as the game seemed to be heading for extra time, Spain scored their second goal and secured their place in the semi-finals.

They will play France on Tuesday, while England will take on Argentina on Wednesday.
