'Smart' parking spaces offer 30 minutes free for shoppers

12:00 23/04/2018

Three busy shopping streets in Brussels now have "smart" parking places - where parking is free for 30 minutes.

The offices of economic affairs alderwoman Marion Lemesre and mobility alderwoman Els Ampe have initiated this six-month test on Rue Sainte-Catherine, Rue Marie-Christine and the street along the Place du Grand Sablon.

Based on successful versions already in effect in Antwerp, Braine L’Alleud, Kortrijk, La Louvière and Ostend, the spaces, with distinctive signs and orange street markings, require no parking disk or ticket.

The car's presence is electronically detected and the 30-minute countdown begins. If the vehicle doesn't move within half an hour the parking enforcement team is alerted and the driver risks a €25 fine.

Ampe said: "With this system, people making a quick stop will no longer double park or drive round and round, negatively impacting traffic flow."

The parking spots are active from Monday to Saturday, 9.00-18.00. The rest of the time, the spaces can be used by residents without any time restrictions.
