Cheaper on-street parking in City of Brussels

13:30 28/03/2018

On-street parking in the centre of Brussels will become cheaper in the coming weeks, as the City of Brussels brings its rates in line with other municipalities across the region.

The cost of parking for an hour is reduced from €1.50 to €1 - two hours from €4 to €2 and three hours from €7 to €3.50. Every additional hour will be €1.50 and the maximum permitted stay is increased from three to nine hours.

Fines for not paying for a ticket will fall from €40 to €25. Resident cards will be unchanged with the first at €10 and the second at €100, but other cards such as the professional card (for commercial personnel, self-employed and hospital staff) will now be €200 instead of €375.

Some cards will no longer be issued by the city but will originate from the region and be valid in all 19 boroughs. When the changes are implemented over the next few weeks, all the information will be available on the city website.

This is absolute madness. It was already ridiculously cheap before, and to lower it even more... So now you'll get a 25€ fine for not getting a parking ticket for the car you anyway shouldn't bring to town, while having to pay 107€ for forgetting to validate your MOBIB when taking the bus. Brilliant thinking and coordination.

This is a welcome step. Parking charges are ridiculous in Brussels. When the residents are already paying so much taxes these charges are too much. The municipalities should also check the rates of private parkings specially near Gare du midi where the rates are as high as 4.5 euros per hour. Considering people come to pick up and drop their beloved this is absolutely non-sense to charge so much.

Although I partially agree with Petera and totally agree with KWLSHAILESH, I'm surprised by AND.HAL's comments. Parking cheap in Brussels? no way, you just have to compare with other towns in Belgium, e.g. I regularly park in Vilvoorde and the charges are half of what I pay in Brussels.
This is defintiely good news for those who want to street park in town on a Saturday rather than paying exorbitant cark parking prices.

Parking fees are an unfair tax raise in the first place: we pay road tax. And if you're allowed to drive, you must be allowed to park.
Plus...
You pay tax when you buy the vehicle.
You pay tax on fuel.
You pay tax on new spare parts.
You pay tax to have parts replaced.
And...
You already pay tax on the hard-earned euros you use to buy the vehicle in the first place!
Because "they" need it to pay for six governments and a multititude of civil servants.

"And if you're allowed to drive, you must be allowed to park."

Really? Street parking fees are not a new imposition and certainly are not exclusive to Brussels ("they" need it to pay for six governments). If you don't want to pay for parking, use a bicycle and/or the tram, bus, metro.
By the way, did you notice that the fees are being lowered?
