Saint-Josse has lowest number of cars per capita in Belgium

20:10 16/08/2017

The Belgian municipalities with the lowest number of cars are all in Brussels, reports Bruzz based on figures from the FPS Mobility and Transport. The municipality with the fewest car owners is Brussels' Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, with 181 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. On the other side of the spectrum is Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, with 405 cars. Car ownership is linked to economic well-being, according to the figures.

At a time when the number of cars on Belgian roads continues to rise, car ownership in Saint-Josse and other Brussels municipalities remains stable. The 13 Belgian municipalities with the relatively lowest number of cars are all in Brussels. "Not surprising,” says Joost Kaesemans, spokesman for FEBIAC, the Belgian federation of the car and two-wheeler industry, to BRUZZ. “Especially when you take into account the wide range of alternative modes of transport and the hassle it is to drive a car in the city."

Wallonia is more vast and sparsely populated than Flanders and certainly Brussels. Eight out of 10 municipalities with the highest number of cars are therefore found in Wallonia. The highest number of cars per capita is in the Walloon Brabant Lasne, with 552 cars per 1,000 inhabitants.

The noise caused by car traffic and low respect of pedestrians in Brussels is in fact one of the most surprising and disappointing facts of living in Brussels. There's also this fancy-car lifestyle here that had always seemed to me as a syndrome of small towns before I had moved here. Take other European capitals like Berlin to see the different scenario is possible. Brussels can learn from them.

Sadly it's the lack of any one government with a clear and coherent plan for public transport and petty intercommune arguments account lots of the car reliance I live outside of Bxl and I can't get a ticket that covers me in a single fair on bus into anywhere in town easily so no wonder people drive us all cars as tax breaks

Sad to say that but my opinion is that Brussels is way backwards compared to other cities when it comes to public transport and cars...
