More alcohol checks during World Cup

10:51 23/05/2014

The Belgian police are launching a new designated driver (‘BOB’) campaign during the World Cup matches, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. The campaign will include extra police checkpoints and alcohol controls during and after the matches, especially when the Belgian Red Devils are playing. “Along with the numerous World Cup matches in the coming weeks, there will be a lot of drinking and partying,” recognises the Belgian Road Safety Institute, which is organising the summer campaign.

“The police decide where, when and how strictly they will enforce the controls, but for major events like the World Cup, the idea is to intercept drunk drivers before they can cause trouble,” said Marc Hellinckx of the Standing Committee of the Local Police.

The new BOB campaign starts on June 2 and will continue long after the World Cup is over, until early September. Several well-known Belgians support the initiative, but their names are to remain secret until the start of the campaign.
