Man arrested in Brussels over suspected plot to attack US embassy

20:22 24/06/2019

A Belgian man has been arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack on the American embassy in Brussels.

The federal prosecutor said the man, identified by his initials "MG", was arrested by the federal police's anti-terror squad in the capital on Saturday morning.

He remains in custody and has been charged with "attempted bombing in a terrorist context" and "preparation of a terrorist offence".

The man, in his forties, had been monitored by security services for a long time, according to RTBF, after his behaviour on social media attracted their attention.

He denies any involvement. The US embassy in Brussels declined to comment.

Either release the guy's name or don't. Giving his initials only leads us all to start wondering if our friend or colleague with those initials might the person in question. We start suspecting anybody, from Mel Gibson to Mikhail Gorbachev...
