Jommeke gets own comic strip mural in Brussels
After Suske and Wiske, Nero, Spirou and Tintin, Jommeke now has its own wall in Brussels. The mural is illustrated by Sarina Ahmad, the granddaughter of Jommeke creator Jef Nys, De Morgen reports.
There are currently 50 comic strip murals in and around Brussels, but this is the first one dedicated to Jommeke, the popular Belgian comic book series named after its main character. The new mural was unveiled yesterday in Rue de la Chanterelle in Laken. Three painters spent five days working on the 7-metre high, 5-metre wide wall, and used 35 litres of paint.
The drawing itself was conceived and drawn by graphic designer Sarina Ahmad, the granddaughter of the original artist Jef Nys, who passed away in 2009. "When he died, it hit me hard," she says. "Drawing and writing was my way to process that grief.”
That mourning process resulted in a colourful and dynamic mural filled with all the Jommeke figures, including Flip, Choco and Pekkie.
