Ixelles pub La Bastoche files for bankruptcy protection
A popular Brussels pub in what The Guardian calls one of Europe's coolest neighbourhoods has applied for bankruptcy protection, faced with spiralling debt.
La Bastoche has been a hangout in the student district next to Ixelles cemetery for more than half a century.
The neighbourhood was praised by the British newspaper last month for its "bars and boutiques ... emerging talent and new investment".
La Bastoche, on the Ixelles cemetery roundabout, applied to go into administration last October.
According to RTBF, the pub's financial situation has worsened further since then - and its debts reportedly amount to €800,000.
The Brussels commercial court is currently examining the case. Lawyers for La Bastoche are keen to find a buyer.
