Electric scooter filmed at 70kph on Brussels ring

10:17 04/08/2020

A man has been filmed riding an electric scooter at 70kph on the Brussels ring road.

A motorist spotted the scooter using the emergency lane late at night. The rider was not wearing a helmet or a fluorescent vest.

Scooters are banned on motorways and their speed is limited to 25kph. Driving in the emergency lane is also illegal.

"If he falls, he risks being very seriously injured, especially in an emergency lane where a lot of rubbish and debris can accumulate," said Benoit Godart, spokesman for road safety institute Vias.

On the scooter's high speed, Godart said: "This is the problem with online purchases - some do not conform to the rules. In the event of an accident, no insurer will cover this."
