E40 motorway bike lane opens

A leisurely cycle ride along a motorway is now possible in Brussels, with the inauguration of a bike lane along part of the E40 between Evere and Schaerbeek.

The two-way temporary bike path runs along the right-hand lane of the Brussels-bound carriageway from Avenue des Communautés, next to Cora, finishing at Rue du Colonel Bourg alongside the RTBF.

The 1.7km path is separated from the 70kph traffic by concrete blocks and provides a new connection between the Brussels regional bike path network and Flemish Brabant's "node-to-node" cycling network.

It is part of the Brussels region's plan to create an extra 40km of routes to encourage more people to cycle as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
