Belgian motorist wins €156,000 legal battle against Tesla

11:35 20/06/2023

A Belgian man has won a court case against car manufacturer Tesla, successfully suing the American corporation for a €158,600 refund on his car after proving that it was riddled with serious safety problems.

The man purchased his Tesla Model S P100D electric car several years ago and reported that it was plagued with issues: faulty sensors, inappropriate braking and a faulty display screen, among other problems.

An investigation by independent experts confirmed the issues. Since its entry into the market, Tesla has been the subject of numerous investigative reports and even an entire book regarding its faulty vehicles.

The case of the Belgian man who sued them lasted four years before an Antwerp court ruled in his favour, confirming the existence of serious shortcomings in terms of driving comfort and safety, as reported in Het Laatste Nieuws.

In its verdict, the court also criticised Tesla's failure to cooperate, in particular its failure to provide the expert with data relating to the vehicle.

Tesla, which was forced to take back the disputed vehicle and repay €156,800 to its Belgian customer, has decided to appeal the ruling.

The court also chastised Tesla for its lack of cooperation, including for failing to furnish the expert with vehicle data.
