World Cup: Belgium beat Russia 1-0 with late goal

11:30 23/06/2014

Belgium secured a place in the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday evening, after beating Russia 1-0. Fans waited a long time to see the winning goal which came only in the last few minutes of the game: substitute Divock Origi smashed a goal in after a neat pass from Eden Hazard with three minutes left to go.

The rest of the game lacked the vigour and drama of Belgium vs Algeria – and yet again saw a substitute score the winning goal – but that didn’t stop Red Devils fans from celebrating. In the Maracana stadium, Rio de Janeiro, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde leapt to their feet when Origi delivered and afterwards posed for photos with the jubilant team.

In Brussels, some 21,000 fans crammed into the Roi Baudouin stadium to cheer on their team. In spite of the record turnout, no serious incidents were reported at the stadium or elsewhere in the capital.
