World Cup: 15,000 fans cram into Roi Baudouin stadium
More than 15,000 football fans crammed into Brussels’ Roi Baudouin stadium to see the Belgium-US match in Brazil on Tuesday evening. The stadium’s stand 2 was specially opened to let in an extra 2,000 fans.
At the end of the match, at 00.30, Belgium’s Red Cross spokesperson Nany Ferroni said staff had been called out to treat 19 people in Brussels and a further 15 in Wallonia.
A giant screen had been set up in stand 2 of the Roi Baudouin stadium, where the crowds danced into the night after the Belgium-US match.
“Belgium woke up for this last 16 match,” Gaël, 25, told La Libre Belgique. “It’s the first match where the Devils went on the offensive. Hazard finally played a great match.” Ophélie, 23, said the Red Devils deserved to win even before extra time. “They didn’t stop creating opportunities for themselves, even though they didn’t score.”
The crowds chanted the name of Romelu Lukaku, whose entry into the match in extra time ultimately led the Red Devils team to victory.
