Spotlight on Spain

This year, the fair will introduce a brand new ‘Spotlight’ section, highlighting a country, technique, style or theme. For the 2023 edition, the event celebrates its historic position as one of the most internationally diverse fairs in the Belgian arts calendar. It focuses on the Spanish galleries that have for many years been proud ambassadors for their country at the Brussels art gathering.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience and explore the work of artists based in Spain today. The Spotlight section brings together six Spanish galleries presenting works by over 30 artists: Al Contar del Arte (Aranda de Duero), Anquins Gallery (Reus), L’Arcada Galeria d’Art (Blanes), María Aguilar (Novo Sancti Petri), Juca Claret (Madrid) and OCCO Art Gallery (Madrid).

The fair also boasts several special projects. Argentinian architect and sculptor Alejandro Propato will present Fuchsia Deployment, a monumental site-specific installation suspended from the ceiling of Tour & Taxis. Two young Belgian artists, Sara Plantefève-Castryck and Wannes Cools, join forces to welcome visitors to a fun interactive printmaking workshop. Participants will be invited to cut and paste their own patterns to create a unique print design that will evolve during the fair.

Belgian creative duo ROXEHA, formed by Roxanne Wegscheider and Denis Auspert, are getting ready to unveil The Happy Trip, a 5m long doodle of funky characters and asymmetric shapes that visitors will be able to colour in. In addition, there’s late-night openings (until 22.00) on 9 and 10 February, when some of the participating galleries will host live paintings, artist interventions and book signings.
