Wallonia to add 2,500 new electric car charging points by 2026

09:03 31/08/2023

Electric car owners will be able to charge their vehicles at 2,448 new charging points in Wallonia by 2026.

The charging stations will be rolled out gradually over a two-year period starting in the summer of 2024, Le Soir reports.

The locations of the charging points were determined according to a series of criteria such as population density, type of housing, the presence of shops, shopping centres, sports or cultural centres, existing stations and other factors.

The number of charging points will vary greatly from just one in Berloz to 185 in Charleroi, with 97 in Liège, 52 in Namur and 39 in Mons.

Only two Walloon communes, Blegny and Ellezelles, have opted out of the initiative to expand the charging network in their municipality.

The Walloon government has budgeted €15 million for the new stations, which will involve granting concessions to private operators responsible for installing, maintaining and operating the charging points in public spaces.
