03:50 20/08/2015

You can compare the Tour de France with a tennis Grand Slam, to the World Cup in football. Whoever wins gets a prestigious place of honour in the list of winners and enjoy eternal fame.

And yes, the Tour winner also gets a nice present financially. Whoever is standing on the highest winners platform in Paris gets a cash prize of €450,000 on top of all the honour. Second place must be satisfied with €200,000, and number three gets €100,000.

The amount continues systematically downward. Fifth place receives €50,000; 150th place gets “only” €400.

Total prize
In total during the Tour de France, some 3.5 million euros is divvied out: at the finish line on the Champs-Elysées, but also during the various stages.

Each stage winner, for example, is paid €8,000, the winning team of the time trials receive €10,000. And yes, every day of wearing the yellow jersey earns you €7,000.

In the secondary rankings as well, during “La Grande Boucle” there is also a pretty cent to earn.

An overview:

Green jersey: €25,000

Best climber (polka dotted jersey): €25,000

Best young rider (white jersey): €20,000

Best team: €50,000

Finally, the most attacking rider is rewarded for his enthusiasm with the Combativity Award of €20,000. So all the smaller prizes together can add up to a tidy sum.
