Wage Watchers: How much does an engineer-researcher earn?

15:04 05/01/2015
We asked Patrice Sarzenstein, 42, from Besançon (France) how he spends his net salary of €2,500 per month.

What do you do for work?

I do scientific research focused on industry. In my job, I have a lot of freedom and not much stress, because I work whenever I want with plenty of autonomy. It’s really more of a hobby than my job.

What do you think of your salary?

My salary isn’t good for someone with a doctorate and lots of experience. Before, I earned more in the private sector, but I preferred to stop working for a commercial business.

Do you save?

A little. I don’t put much aside, but I keep some money on hand in case health problems or unexpected costs pop up.

What do you like to spend money on?

I don’t spend much. For my children, I buy quality, especially on healthy food. I make sure that we eat local products, not from patriotism, but because it’s not ecological to have everything flown in. The same goes for clothes. For the kids, I often buy clothes in the sales that are too big, so that they can wear them the next year.

Is there anything that you hate spending money on?

A new car. I have a car, because I need one, but I’ll drive it around until its last breath.

Do you have a big dream?

I dream of a just society without war or conflict where Europe has open borders and is no longer a fortress. Regardless of colour, language or beliefs, all people should be equal. I also dream of a just community with housing for those who need it and economic reform. I’m an idealist, and a zealot for freedom of the internet and knowledge sharing.
