VUB launches new English-language bachelor

14:53 31/08/2016

The Free University of Brussels (VUB), in collaboration with the University of Ghent, is this academic year launching a new English-language Bachelor of Social Science. "The aim is to educate students in an interdisciplinary mix of sociology, political science and communication studies,” says the programme director, sociologist Dieter Vandebroeck. It is the first time that Flemish universities offer a bachelor's degree in English, writes Bruzz.

"The idea for the Bachelor of Social Science in English came after a VUB study showed a gap in the higher education options available for the large group of English-speaking students coming from secondary schools in Brussels," explains Vandebroeck.

"The results were confirmed by Afiliatys, a support group for EU staff members. At the graduate level, there are already many programmes offered in English, but at the undergraduate level there are only a few programmes that are primarily economic or business-oriented."

There are 46 students enrolled for the new Bachelor so far, including 30 Belgians, eight EU students and eight non-EU students, according to Vandebroeck.
