Tram routes for Brussels periphery approved
A previously proposed line between the airport and Tervuren and another linking Brussels and Ninove have been shelved. The purpose of the new network is to take some of the pressure off of the Ring by extending public transport without the need to change between the city and the periphery. The three lines together comprise 60km of tramway, 15km of it existing lines within Brussels.
Grouwels will also press remind Hilde Crevits, her Flemish counterpart for mobility, of the desire expressed earlier this year for the Flemish-Brussels tram network to operate an integrated fares scheme, as well as ensuring sufficient stops within Brussels.
There are still quite a few steps to be taken before the first spadeful of earth is moved on the project, Grouwels said, and the time needs to be used making sure Flanders and Brussels are on the same page. “A transregional tram network is a win-win situation,” she said. “Mobility in Flemish Brabant and in Brussels will be improved. This project will demonstrate the value of good inter-regional cooperation.”
