Tram derails in Schaerbeek, injuring 10 people

A driver and nine passengers were injured when their tram derailed in Schaerbeek and smashed into the side of a building.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon on line 62, at the junction of Rue Rogier and Rue des Palais.

The tram, heading towards Eurocontrol, came off the tracks as it turned a corner. Witness photos show the front windscreen smashed.

Two of the injured passengers were taken to hospital. The driver, who tested negative for drink and drugs, was treated in hospital for shock.

Police said no other vehicle was involved in the crash. Firefighters set up a security perimeter around the affected building and a municipal architect was called out to carry out structural checks.
