Suspected terrorist arrested at Charleroi airport
A 24-year-old Syrian was intercepted by customs officials at Charleroi Airport in Gosselies on Tuesday. Suspected of belonging to a terrorist group, he was placed under arrest by an examining magistrate on Thursday.
The man, who had come from Greece and was on his way to Scandinavia, was in possession of false passports and suspicious documents about the situation in Syria. Questioned by investigators in Charleroi, the suspect denied all charges against him but was nevertheless placed under arrest for belonging to a terrorist organisation and using false documents. He will appear in court in Charleroi on Monday.
He is the second suspected jihadist to be arrested in less than two months at Charleroi airport. At the beginning of August, another Syrian was detained in similar circumstances. He also came from Greece and was on his way to Scandinavia; was travelling with false documents and was in possession of a USB stick containing videos of murders carried out in his home country.
