Supermarkets cut tonnes of sugar from 3,300 products

22:13 11/02/2018

Belgium's three biggest supermarket chains have reduced the sugar and fat content in 3,300 products in just one year, according to a new report.

Colruyt, Delhaize and Carrefour said they had altered the recipes of their own-brand foods, between them cutting out 363 tonnes of sugar, 170 tonnes of fat and 82 tonnes of salt.

In June 2016, the Belgian food industry federation Fevia agreed a target with the federal health ministry to bring down the calorie content in their in-house products by 5% by the end of 2017, compared with 2012 levels.

According to Het Laatste Nieuws, a fuller report on how the supermarkets are meeting their objectives will be published this spring.
