Storm warning after warmest 8 April on record

21:48 08/04/2018

A storm warning has been issued for all of Belgium on Monday night - after Sunday was the hottest 8 April on record.

The Uccle observatory recorded 23.3°C at 15.00 on Sunday, beating the previous record high of 22.7°C on 8 April 1969.

Saturday was the first time this year that Uccle recorded temperatures in excess of 20°C. The E40 motorway was clogged up with day-trippers to the seaside.

Els Ampe, the Brussels city councillor for public works, responded to complaints on Twitter about the state of the city's parks and the Bois de la Cambre after Saturday's hot weather. Several people had taken photos of overflowing rubbish bins and piles of waste.

After the warm weekend, the Royal Meteorological Institute is forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rain from about 16.00 on Monday until 7.00 on Tuesday.

The rest of the week will be variable with the occasional stormy shower and highs around 18°C.

Lovely here in Etterbeek! No rain last night and today has been sunny and warm. I hung my washing in the courtyard and it is nearly dry!
