Stib's electric shopping bus to launch on 1 June

22:42 17/04/2018

The Stib's first all-electric bus route will enter service on 1 June, connecting the city's Dansaert and Louise shopping districts.

The Brussels public transport operator took delivery on Tuesday of its first electric bus, with another six on their way. The new 22-seater buses have about eight hours of battery autonomy and will be recharged overnight.

The new route, line 33, will cross downtown Brussels via Rue du Lombard and the Sablon. The route is similar to that already operated by the City of Brussels' free shopping bus, which launched last year using electric minibuses.

Line 33 will be the first in a number of Stib experiments into all-electric technology. Orders have been placed for another 30 vehicles, including large articulated buses that can work some of the city's busiest routes.

Some 90 hybrid buses are also due to be rolled out on several routes from next January.
