Stib drivers disciplined for sexist WhatsApp comments about female colleagues
Brussels public transport operator Stib has formally reprimanded several metro drivers after messages in a private WhatsApp group were found to contain sexist content, including comments ranking female colleagues on their looks.
The issue came to light after screenshots circulated within tib and on social media showing male employees sharing remarks about the bodies and attractiveness of female co-workers, with some participants apparently assigning ratings based on sexualised criteria.
Stib has confirmed that an internal investigation was launched once the messages were brought to its attention.
The public transport operator said the conduct violated the company’s code of ethics and professional standards, and that those involved were disciplined.
It added: “These incidents are extremely serious, totally unacceptable, and contrary to our values, Belgian law, and our work regulations.”
Stib also said that behaviour such as this can lead to dismissal, as well as serious internal and legal sanctions.
The revelation has reignited discussion about sexism and gender equality in public service workplaces, especially because this is not the first time that Stib workers have been caught. In 2022, several male employees photographed female employees without permission, and shared them on a similar group chat.
Stib said that it would offer additional training on professional conduct and equality issues for all employees, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.
It also reiterated that complaints of harassment or discriminatory behaviour can be reported through official channels and will be taken seriously, although it is difficult to monitor what is being said on private group chats.
