South Station area to get major makeover

16:51 13/12/2017

The Brussels-Capital Region is planning major investments to improve the transport infrastructure outside South Station. According to minister-president Rudi Vervoort (PS), the federal government’s Beliris fund is providing €2.3 million for the project.

The works, which will include general improvements to the area around South Station, as well as to tram and bus infrastructure, can also expect funding from private partners in the form of urban planning fees. The new office and residential project Victor, for example, should bring in some €13 million, according to Vervoort.

And finally, some of the money earmarked for the new Constitution metro station will now go to the South Station project. The Constitution project has in fact been slimmed down and requires less investment.

Although some of the project will be carried out next year, much of it is still in the planning phase, so no complete plan has yet been released.

Well done Brussels. It's about time we improved the image of Gare du Midi. As it rains often, how about building a structure that keeps travelers dry when waiting for a taxi?
