Second entrance planned for Schaerbeek train station

12:48 08/11/2017

SNCB has included an additional entrance to the Schaerbeek train station on its list of structural priorities for the coming years. The rail authority wants to use the tunnels beneath the tracks to foot traffic to allow travellers easier access to and from the canal area.

The opening of Docks Bruxsel shopping centre on the canal last year was a major impetus to prioritise the project. More than 10,000 people a day visit Docks, which includes shops, eateries, a cinema and an adventure park.

The plan to create access to and from the station through the tunnels has been approved by the authority’s board and now must be approved by the federal government. If approved, works would begin in 2019.

The new entrance would be located on Avenue de Vilvorde and would cut the walk from the station to Docks from two kilometres to less than 500 metres. The works would take approximately two years and cost €3.3 million.
