Running for Retrak: Week 15

16:22 22/05/2013

Here we go then, the final few days before the big event. Come Sunday morning, you’ll find me lining up with tens of thousands of others at the start line of the Brussels 20km, hoping that all these months of training will get me round and deliver me in one piece a couple of hours later to the finish under the Cinquantenaire arch. At this rate, at least we won’t have to worry about overheating – we’re more likely to be running in snow than sunshine.

This week I managed the run-commute I skived last week, from the back end of Groot-Bijgaarden as far as Gare du Midi. Flushed with exertion and a little pride, I was quickly put in my place when I saw photos on Facebook from a friend of a friend’s incredible efforts back in England – 10 marathons in 10 days. Given that I’ve struggled at times to stick to a basic three-month training plan in the hope of achieving – let’s be honest – a pretty modest distance, I can only imagine the time, effort and dedication that goes into something like that. Friend of a friend, I salute you.

So now all that’s left is maybe one more short run, a quick shake-out of the legs on Saturday and a brief prayer to the god of dodgy left knees that mine holds up long enough on Sunday. Truth be told, I’m looking forward to it. Best of luck to everyone else who’s running, and I’ll see you at the finish for a well-earned beer.

I’m doing all this in aid of Retrak. Thanks so much to everyone who’s sponsored and supported me along the way
