Reyers viaduct will remain closed for longer

09:54 17/07/2014

The Reyers viaduct, closed for repairs since 30 June, will remain closed longer than originally planned because of the gravity of the damage found, the commune of Schaerbeek has confirmed.

Works to repair the two approaches to the viaduct, from the Montgomery side and from the Meiser side, was planned to last until the end of September. However, the state of repair of the viaduct is so serious that works could take an additional two months. Repairs to the central span of the viaduct were planned for later.

The viaduct carries some 33,000 vehicles a day, but works are hindered by the presence of the premetro lines 7 and 25 under the road surface, which have to continue to operate during the viaduct's closure. To make matters worse for motorists, the nearby Place Meiser is also the scene of major works this summer

As far as Schaerbeek is concerned, the entire structure could disappear tomorrow: the communal council voted for demolition this year, with public works alderwoman Cécile Jodoigne calling for  Boulevard Reyers to be transformed into a “city boulevard”. Brussels Region disagreed, and is likely to go on disagreeing now that the May elections have produced a governing coalition virtually unchanged in composition.
