'Red alert' as heatwave set to last until Wednesday

14:16 07/08/2020

The Royal Meteorological Institute has upgraded its heat warning for Belgium to "red alert", with peak temperatures forecast around 35°C until next Wednesday.

Overnight temperatures are unlikely to fall below 21°C over the coming days. Brussels recorded 34°C on Friday and is forecast 36°C on Saturday, 35°C on Sunday and Monday, and 34°C on Tuesday.

Storms are expected next week, according to the latest IRM forecast, with temperatures finally falling below the 30°C mark on Thursday.

The official advice during a "red alert" is to stay at home, where possible, between 11.00 and 21.00, with windows, curtains and shutters closed. Air the home overnight.

Drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and limit your physical activity.

Note to the people of Brussels:
Water is a liquid a little like beer, but without the bubbles, the taste, and the fun. Unlike beer, water kills about 320,000 people worldwide every year (according to the WHO: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/drowning). Drink responsibly.
