Pro- and anti-Erdogan demonstrations as Turkish leader visits Brussels

10:27 10/03/2020

Supporters and opponents of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan demonstrated on Monday evening as Turkey's leader arrived in Brussels to meet EU officials.

Some 200 supporters gathered outside the Turkish embassy on Avenue des Arts, where Erdogan gave a speech. He then headed to the EU district, where he met European Council president Charles Michel and Commission president Ursula von der Leyen to discuss the migration crisis on the Greek-Turkish border.

A counter-demonstration was organised near Schuman roundabout by the Kurdish community in Belgium. Demonstrators shouted slogans such as "Erdogan dictator" and "Release the political prisoners in Turkey".

Police intervened after a fight broke out between several anti-Erdogan demonstrators and a supporter of the Turkish president.
