Only one in 20 Belgians willing to work until 67

12:07 18/12/2014

Only one in 20 Belgians are willing to work until the new proposed retirement age of 67. Willingness to work longer is linked to wage and flexible working conditions, according to a study by Trendhuis in which 4,000 Belgians took part. The study was commissioned by the European Social Fund Agency (ESF) Flanders.

The results show that Belgians are generally willing to work longer, but only if they feel they are earning enough money and have flexible working conditions, which directly relates to the study's finding regarding the link between education levels of workers. Two-thirds of highly educated employees reported they were willing to work until the age of 60, while this was less than half among those with a lower education level.

One-quarter of the highly educated respondents would even work until 65 or older, whereas this was only the case for 14% of the respondents with a lower education level. "Those with a higher diploma deem their jobs feasible for a longer period of time - both physically and mentally - than those with a lower degree," the study concludes. "The jobs that require a higher degree are often the most feasible to carry out for a longer period of time."

It's hardly surprising when they have a government that been retiring people rather than make them unemployed for decades. They simply do not expect to be working beyond 60 let alone 67.

I assume all the people who want to retire before 67 will have been making their own pension arrangements.

It's about time we got some more complete studies and comprehensive reporting. It's not a question of whether or not you would like to work until 67, how many people would volunteer to work longer?!
The real question people should be asked is" Would you be prepared to contribute another x% per week to your pension for your working life, or pay y% more tax to fund your ability to retire at the current age requirements, OR would you rather work until 67. That might encourage people to make a different choice!

""I assume all the people who want to retire before 67 will have been making their own pension arrangements.""

No, Eric., they have not. Mummy State has been promising early retirement for decades and taking the money hand over fist in order to pay for it. This of course makes it difficult to use your own money to cater for yourself because the State confiscated it and said....TRUST US! Now they notice it does not add up.

Only a fool trusts another person with their money and future on a promise and prime among those who cannot be trusted, a zillion self concerned and over paid Belgian Politicians.

Seems to me it's people's own lives, they can do and decide whatever they want if given the choice...

Belgium has far too many ministers who demand fat pensions.

Yea, the hypocrisy from ministers does not help much.
