Obama visits Brussels on March 26

12:24 19/03/2014

American President Barack Obama is scheduled to arrive in Brussels on Wednesday, March 26. He will visit the headquarters of the European Union, NATO and the Belgian government. His plans are to meet with Commission President José-Manuel Barroso and European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy.

Obama’s visit calls for a number of exceptional security measures. The Ministry of the Interior’s Crisis Centre did not yet communicate its plans, but the roads between the airport and the visited institutions will likely be closed to all traffic. The President typically travels in his armoured limousine, nicknamed "The Beast", inside a convoy of 40 vehicles escorted by private security guards.

Obama's visit to Belgium - the first of its kind - is part of an extended European tour: On March 24 and 25, he attends a summit on nuclear safety in the Hague. After Brussels, the President flies to Rome, where he will meet the Pope.

No, Obama is not quite the first president to soon be on an official visit to this country. There have been more since Dwight Eisenhower after WW2 ; some US presidential visits (over 4 decades) being the Presidents Carter and Bush's.

@ acsonline: I think they are saying that it's Obama's first visit to Belgium as president.
