Number of traffic deaths in Belgium at all-time low

11:49 01/08/2014

The number of traffic-related deaths in Belgium has reached a record low, dropping by 7% last year compared with 2012. In 2013 there were 724 traffic-related deaths in Belgium, but 6.7% fewer accidents, 6.6% fewer victims and 6% fewer deaths than the previous year, write Het Laatste Nieuws and De Morgen according to statistics from the FPS Economy.

While the total number of traffic-related deaths in Brussels and Wallonia fell by about 7% last year, in Flanders the number of road fatalities in 2013 remained around the same as in 2012, at 384 deaths. "This is a worrying trend," said traffic expert Werner De Dobbeleer of the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Knowledge (VSV).

Moreover, the number of victims among bikers and pedestrians hardly decreased in Flanders since 2005. "Seatbelt, alcohol and speeding campaigns have definitely helped to reduce the overall number of traffic deaths, but sadly we see the number of biker and pedestrian deaths continue to be a serious problem in the Flemish region,” said De Dobbeleer.

Traffic deaths at all time low and congestion at all time high... sounds like a Smet solution - slow down the traffic so much that no one moves enough to cause an accident.
