Number of speeding tickets triples in five years

11:32 02/06/2014

The Belgian federal police last year caught a record number of 1,456,073 speeders, an increase of more than 17% compared to 2012. Five years ago, police caught 557,818 drivers over the speed limit, or about one-third of the number last year.

The sharp increase is partially due to the higher number of mobile speed cameras and permanent speed checks, especially on the E40 and in Liège, because the police radars caught fewer drivers, report Het Nieuwsblad and the newspapers of Sudpresse.

Notably, 45% of the drivers caught speeding in Flanders had foreign license plates, which implies that many Flemish drivers are aware of the locations of the speed cameras and adjust their driving accordingly.
