Nude cyclists demand better bike safety in Brussels
About 150 nude cyclists rode their bikes through Brussels on Saturday for the 11th edition of Cyclonudista. The cyclists aim to draw attention to their vulnerable position in city traffic and to demand political action be taken to make cycling in the city safer and more attractive. They also want to promote the bicycle as a means to a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
"The rate at which we currently consume goods is unsustainable," says Jérôme Naturel of Cyclonudista. "Traffic in the city, where the car is king, is just another example of how we’re destroying our planet. We want a softer mobility policy, with more attention for people’s welfare."
Taking the bicycle rather than the car to move around in Brussels is a viable solution, says Naturel. "More bikes and less cars means less pollution and less noise. Today we are biking naked, just to emphasise the vulnerability of cyclists. Our politicians and policy-makers urgently need to pay more attention to cyclists and make the necessary adjustments to the traffic infrastructure for their benefit, including more and safer bike paths."
