Non-profit sector march brings Brussels to standstill

10:46 21/03/2017

The Brussels Capital-Ixelles police expect heavy traffic this morning in the capital due to a large demonstration organised by the unions of the non-profit sector, representing welfare, health care and culture. The police are therefore calling on drivers to avoid the city centre. More than 10,000 protesters are expected to take part in the rally, reports Het Laatste Nieuws.

It is the third time in four months that the non-profit associations, which serve people in need, take to the streets in protest against the lack of a new social accord following a series of severe budget cuts. The unions organised a similar rally on 24 November which brought together about 20,000 people.

This time, organisers are expecting "more than 10,000", although the figures are still provisional, according to Mark Selleslach, national secretary of the Christian trade union LBC-NVK. The end of the demonstration is planned for around 13.00 today.

Until that time, the local police warn for heavy traffic in the northern part of the city and on the inner ring road between Sainctelette Square and Place Saint-Cathérine. Travellers are encouraged to use public transportation, although there may be some hindrance there, as well.
