'March for our lives' in Brussels to demand US gun reform

20:08 22/03/2018

Youth activists have organised a demonstration in central Brussels this Saturday, calling for stronger US gun legislation after a spate of shootings.

On 14 February, a student used an AR-15 to kill 14 of his classmates and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Ever since the tragic incident, uproar has sparked not only in the United States, but across the globe. On 24 March, the world, including people in Brussels, will join a "march for our lives". The Brussels event will start at 15.00 on the Place de la Monnaie.

"Students around the globe recognise that everyone should feel safe in school," said organiser Miles Herszenhorn, a 15-year-old American student living in Brussels.

He said one of the main reasons why he organised this event is because he is constantly worrying about his cousins' safety in their schools back in the States.

"I hope we send a strong message to American students: the international community hears you and supports you," he added.

Democrats Abroad Belgium is teaming up with Herszenhorn and other youth activists to allow people from all over Belgium to come and have their voices be heard.

Pauline Manos, chair of Democrats Abroad Belgium, said the young students taking a stance and challenging gun laws inspire her.

"Gun control in the US is a non-partisan issue that affects us all," Manos said. "As a mother about to send her son to the US on a study abroad programme, I can't help but be concerned for his safety."

There should be more reforms because people are asking about how to deal on reviews. I know that it won't happen so early, but we need to know about it from now on for sure.
