Proximus CEO backs campaign against World Cup rapper Damso

21:56 08/03/2018

A campaign against the choice of Brussels rapper Damso to produce the Red Devils' official World Cup anthem has received the backing of one of Belgian football's biggest sponsors.

Proximus chief executive Dominique Leroy has urged the Belgian Football Union to reconsider who should represent Belgium's World Cup campaign - after women's groups complained about Damso's misogynistic lyrics.

Leroy's intervention comes after the Women's Council of Belgium wrote an open letter to the heads of major Belgian football sponsors including Proximus, Carrefour, AB InBev, ING, Coca-Cola and BMW.

"His lyrics are filled with disgust, contempt and verbal abuse towards women", the letter reads, adding that the choice sent out a "bad signal".

It continued: "The World Cup is a much-publicised event that attracts men, women and children. It is unacceptable that a person like Damso, known for his coarse and sexist language, is the flag-bearer for our country. What does this choice say about our society?"

The Belgian Football Union said on Thursday that it stood by its choice, which was made last November.
