Festive musical evening at Le Baixu on 19 September
It is a double celebration for Brussels music venue Le Baixu, which is celebrating its fourth anniversary and new cultural season with a festive evening on 19 September.
The Tour & Taxis cultural space has invited musical duo J Mood to launch its new programme with musicians Kelvin Sholar and Jeanfrançois Prins creating an inventive musical dialogue that suits the cosy setting of Le Baixu.
Further entertainment on the evening comes courtesy of vocal quartet O!BOY and actor Bruno Georis reciting a selection of poems. For added conviviality, a generous cheese platter will be served
Jazz, classical, world music and family concerts, in addition to exhibitions and creative workshops, form the heart of the season’s line-up. The non-profit also helps young and emerging talent gain performance experience at the onset of their careers.
The launch event aims to be a genuine opportunity for dialogue between the artists and the audience – in keeping with the socio-cultural ethos that has been at the heart of the Baixu project since its inception.
Founder Martine Renwart first set up a charitable venture in the Bahia province of Brazil to help a poor fishing community. To raise money, she drew on her experience of artistic programming at La Monnaie opera house to organise fundraising concerts.
After 12 years in South America, she returned to Belgium and combined her love for Brazil and music by setting up Le Baixu in 2022. “The name means beautiful in the Pataxos Indian language, which ties in with my story of combining beautiful music with a social and community project,” she explains.
