12% increase in Brussels bike path use
Cycling activity in Brussels increased significantly in 2025, with Brussels Mobility recording a 12% rise in the number of cyclists using designated bike paths compared with 2024.
The growth shows a broader trend towards active mobility in the city.
Brussels Mobility data shows that the increase was especially marked on weekdays, suggesting that more commuters are choosing bicycles for their daily travel to and from work.
Specifically between 6.00 and 7.00 there was a 15% year-on-year increase in cycling, and between 7.00 and 9.00 there was a 12% increase.
The rise follows a sustained programme of investment in cycling infrastructure in recent years, including new and upgraded lanes and regional routes designed to make cycling safer and more convenient.
The jump also reflects changing attitudes to urban transport, as residents increasingly seek alternatives to driving for both environmental and health reasons.
The expansion of secure bike parking and integration with public transport hubs has encouraged more riders, while the spread of electric bicycles has extended the range of trips for many commuters.
