SNCB steps up fraud checks after 700,000 passengers caught without tickets
Belgian railway operator SNCB is stepping up ticket inspections after seeing a spike in the number of people riding the train without a ticket.
Some 700,000 people did not pay for one or more train journeys last year, RTBF reports, which is 40% more than in 2023.
The figure can be explained by more frequent checks and an increase in the number of passengers, according to SNCB.
The fraud represents tens of millions of euros lost each year.
SNCB notes different levels of fraud, each of which comes with a specific fine that must be paid in addition to the ticket price.
The first offence is for those who board without a ticket: these passengers can simply purchase a ticket from the inspector and pay an additional €9.
“People who are unable to pay the €9 surcharge are asked to settle the matter at a station ticket office, where they will be fined €90,” said SNCB spokesperson Tom Guillaume.
“Finally, in extreme cases, those who fail to comply with the settlement procedure will face administrative fines of up to €500. In the event of repeated offences, this may result in criminal penalties.”
