No fines for drivers with personalised licence plates

12:15 21/05/2015

Cameras carry out speed checks on Belgium’s motorways, but it has this week come to light that one particular type of licence plate is consistently overlooked. The speed cameras do not recognise personalised licence plates, write Belgian media.

There are currently about 10,000 cars registered in Belgium with personalised licence plates, which cost about €1,000 each to make. Because the personalised plates differ from the standard ones, they often go undetected by the speed cameras, Belgium’s transport minister admitted in parliament. Since the introduction of the new licence plates last year, these drivers have barely received fines.

The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic does not have an immediate solution to the problem. "If we want the cameras to recognise all personalised number plates, they may also start registering stickers and other text on cars, which is not the idea."
