New system to alert motorway drivers to wrong-way vehicles

07:59 21/03/2021

A wrong-way driver detection system, described as the first of its kind in Europe, should soon be installed on motorways in Wallonia.

The Luwa group has presented its system for detecting wrong-way drivers. It should equip 300 Walloon motorway slip-roads by the end of 2023 to avoid accidents.

Wrong-way driver accidents are eight times more lethal than other motorway accidents. In Wallonia a wrong-way driver is reported every three days.

The system will make it possible to detect the wrong-way drivers thanks to a new lighting system. The lighting will warn both the wrong-way driver but also the others, those who are driving in the right direction and who do not expect to see a car coming at them.

It will alert other drivers with flashing lights that illuminate a good portion of the road. It will be impossible to miss these lights. They will be activated thanks to a smart camera that will spot cars in the wrong direction on slip-roads.
