New hybrid buses in Brussels by end of the year

22:16 21/02/2018

Brussels public transport operator Stib has made a €42.5 million order to buy 90 new hybrid buses which promise less fuel use, less pollution and less noise.

The Stib has entered into an agreement with Volvo to supply and maintain the buses. Before making the choice, it tested three different models of hybrid bus over the summer holidays. Drivers gave the Volvo prototype the best score.

The vehicles use electric power from an inbuilt battery to accelerate away from stops, before the ordinary engine kicks in. The battery is recharged from the energy generated when the bus is coasting or slowing down.

About 60 of the newly ordered buses will be delivered by the end of the year. An order for a further 145 articulated hybrid buses is being prepared.
